Organic Chemistry - Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides - A Book Review

Organic Chemistry - Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides - A Book ReviewThe Organic Chemistry Tutor Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides are a book on organic chemistry that combines the science of microorganism and the science of compounds into one book. I was expecting the book to be more than what it turned out to be, but I guess it is good enough to make a good teaching resource for students.I enjoyed the book Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides and was excited to read about the topics and write down my ideas for solving some of the problems I encountered when writing up my solutions. It was an interesting book to read as the author provides many examples and pictures that give great examples to illustrate the topic and help you visualize what you are trying to achieve. Many learning materials are very similar to the Organic Chemistry Tutor's book, which is a more advanced step by step to organic chemistry textbook. It contains chapters covering base-electron interactions, solvent activity, and excited states.Chapter One of the Organic Chemistry tutor Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides talks about the essential properties of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. It also discusses the methods of making and reacting molecules and explains how the molecular formula is important in the chemistry. It gives a very good introduction to the material and is a great start for a first organic chemistry book.Chapter Two of the book talks about the more commonly known energy units in organic chemistry, and it discusses the abbreviations of the unit of energy, also called the Boltzmann constant. The book also discusses the various ways that energy is used in the carbon atoms. In addition, this chapter also mentions ionic bonding, the bonding of molecules together, and the equilibrium of molecules.Chapter Three of the book talks about electron density, how the atoms interact with each other, and the various structures of compounds. This chapter also discusses the oxidation and reduction of a molecul e and the importance of bonding. This chapter of the book helps you understand some of the things about electron transfer and the types of atoms that bonds with other atoms.Chapter Four of the book deals with solid and liquid state equilibrium and the various phases of matter. It also discusses the molecules of solids and liquids and how they can interact with each other and react with each other. In this chapter, it also discusses the bonds between the atoms of these molecules and gives an explanation of the structure of the atom.Organic Chemistry is a popular subject in schools and colleges, and the book Ethers Epoxides and Sulfides are a good introduction to the subject and introduces the concepts. Students will gain much knowledge in Organic Chemistry by reading the book and this book is a good learning tool for introducing the various concepts to students.

Acing the Integrated Reasoning Section of the GMAT

Acing the Integrated Reasoning Section of the GMAT Think of the Integrated Reasoning Section of the GMAT as a test to evaluate the applied version of the same skills the GMAT is designed to test overall. The GMAT is intended to assess your competence in analysis, writing, and quantitative reasoning as well as your reading and writing skills. In this section, the key word is reasoning. While the IR includes a basic on-screen calculator, if you possess a talent for estimation and identification of rational responses, you will likely save time and may not even need the calculator. All participants will receive questions of increasing difficulty. There are four question types: tabular analysis, graphical analysis, two-part analysis and multi-source reasoning. While you likely aren't thrilled about adding additional study on top of your prep for the quant and verbal portions of the GMAT, a couple of straightforward methods can give you peace of mind when confronting the Integrated Reasoning section. Get to know graphs, because they abound in IR, particularly bubble charts or scatter plots. They are there to test your ability to extract information from a data set by analysis. Reviewing graphs outside of the typical practice materials, like those found in The Economist, can make you feel more at ease with the various symbols and text. Interspersing the standard data sets with graphs like these can keep your prep work from becoming too tedious. Give the multi-source reasoning questions a close read. While this may seem self-evident, many of us rely on skimming to deal with the volume of text in our lives. If you concentrate enough to nail each piece of information in the exercise on the first read, you save yourself the time spent glancing back and forth from the original text as you answer the questions. This is important when you consider that the entire IR has only 30 allocated minutes. While practicing, evaluate both your timing and how much information you are able to absorb. Don't fear the spreadsheet: there are questions in the Integrated Reasoning section that measure how well you can extract information from a spreadsheet. As long as you have beginner-level familiarity with Excel, the tasks that you have to execute are nowhere near as complex as you might anticipate. It's mostly a matter of being comfortable with the sorting function. Master that, and you will likely be fine. The two-part analysis section is similar to Critical Reasoning and has shorter, clearer prompts than the multi-source reasoning section and spreadsheets in table analysis. However, since the two-part analysis questions comprise one-third of the test, budget your time accordingly. Run through practice sets of twelve questions in one-half hour: four multi-source reasoning, two table analysis, two graphic analysis and four two-part analysis. Like the reading comprehension section, the time-consuming part of multi-part reasoning is reading the material. There is more time on average than in the other sections of the GMAT, but there is not as much time to catch up if you fall behind. Do not be afraid to guess - it is better to include a little informed guesswork in your answers than to run out of time before the final question. With some study and practice, you can acquire the skills needed to meet this challenging test head-on.

Eat Your Sunscreen Alternative Sun Protection

Eat Your Sunscreen Alternative Sun Protection Photo courtesy of Pixabay Despite the common advice to lather on the sunscreen before going outside (or to just avoid going outdoors altogether), instances of skin cancer are on the rise, and the number isnt minuscule. Cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are steadily climbing at 3.1 percent annually, while other forms are jointing the race at a quick 4.2 percent. In fact, skin cancer rates have exploded upward by 77 percent between 1992 and 2006an ironic increase, when we look at the constant push for more sunscreen and less sun exposure. What could possibly be the cause of this increase, despite our ever-increasing safety measures against the sun? It seems individuals have long since forgotten that the sun brings life to our planet; it feeds our plants, warms our bodies and synthesizes vitamin D (which in turn can relieve fibromyalgia pain, treat skin diseases such as psoriasis, promote wound healing, and regulate body temperature) among a host of other necessary functions. According to Mercola.com,  Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been used since ancient times to treat various diseases. This has a scientific background in the fact that a large number of molecules (chromophores) in different layers of the skin interacts with and absorbs UV. To reiterate this idea, the rays from the sun were also used as a standard treatment for tuberculosis before the advent of antibiotics. Surely this cant be the sun were talking about? Its downright dangerous, is a common claim among religious sunscreen-wearers. However, there is a problem with this reasoning, and it lies behind its beneficiaries: sunscreen companies. Sunscreen may be touted as a miracle must-have, yet the ingredients found in nearly all commercial brands could rival the damaging effects of a solar flare on our skin. According to Arthur W. Perry, MD, FACS: Chemical sunscreens don’t sit on the surface of the skin â€" they soak into it and quickly find their way into the bloodstream. They scatter all over the body without being detoxified by the liver and can be detected in blood, urine, and breast milk for up to two days after a single application. That would be just fine if they were uniformly safe â€" but they’re not. Perry reveals that 9 of the 15 chemical sunscreens are considered endocrine disrupters. Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that interfere with hormones, namely estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and thyroid hormones. These chemicals found in sunscreens can cause abnormal development of fetuses and growing children, early puberty and premature breast development in girls, and small and undescended testicles in boys, and contribute to development of breast and ovarian cancers in women and prostate cancers in men. Common singular ingredients found in commercial brands can have specific effects as well. Retinyl Palmitate showed in a 2009 study released by the National Toxicology Program to speed the development of skin tumors and lesions when exposed to sunlight (and by speed we mean a 21 percent faster development of lesions and tumors). In addition, oxybenzone acts as  a hormone disrupter, while the chemical fragrances that makes sunscreen smell like the beach have been linked to organ toxicity and immunotoxicity by the Environmental Working Group  (EWG). To be clear, brands using the harmful ingredients listed above include  Aveeno, Banana Boat, Coppertone Sport, Coppertone Water Babies, Bull Frog, Neutrogena, Store brands (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens), and Hawaiian Tropic, among others, and have been rated as dangerous by the EWG. So what should we do before spending a day at the beach or on a boat without sunscreen? Luckily, there are natural alternatives to sun protection that dont involve slathering on sunscreenones that work with our bodies rather than against them  (and they taste good, too). Tomatoes Tomatoes are bursting with the antioxidant  lycopene, which has shown to protect against too much UV radiation. In fact, according to a study  published in the  Journal of British Dermatology, 20 healthy women who ate a quarter cup of tomato paste in olive oil every day for three months were more protected against sunburn than those who consumed olive oil alone. Enjoy a cup-full for maximum benefits. Almonds and Other Seeds Almonds and sunflower seeds contain hefty doses of vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant that acts as a skin-protector. Be sure to add a few sprinkles to salads or smoothies in your daily diet. Apples Specifically, the skins of apples; a 2007 study at Cornell University showed the red skin of Red Delicious apples contains  triterpenoids, which blocked or killed cancer cells in lab studies. Green Tea Catechin compounds in green tea protect against solar radiation, while the its tannic acid content can be used to soothe sunburns. Drink two cups a day as a preventative or apply two teabags soaked in cold water to a sunburned area. Pomegranate Research at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas AM University showed that the ellagic acid found in pomegranates helps reduce UVA and UVA-induced cell damage. Organic Sunscreen The sunscreens listed below are free  of  Parabens, Phthalates, PEG’s (polyethylene glycols), Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, SLS/SLES, Oxybenzone, and a host of other chemicals found in popular sunscreens, and instead use mineral sun-protectants such as Zinc Oxide. Badger All-Natural Sunscreens ECO FORMULA SPF 30+ by Raw Elements Poofy Naturals The Sunscreen Other options include wearing hats or clothing as a barrier, or finding intermittent shade if you plan on being outdoors for long periods of time. Remember, however, that it takes roughly fifteen minutes of direct sun exposure to synthesize the required daily amount of vitamin D (one of the leading vitamin deficiencies in the U.S.), so it would be prudent to go outdoors for short periods without sunscreen in order to reap the benefits. Without the sun, we would be without nourishment; without a planet capable of supporting life. For thousands of years humans have bathed in the suns rays, worked under its light and hailed its healing powers. Knowing this, what can we say is more likely to cause harm to humans? A life-giving source that has sustained life for millions of years or an unnatural bottled chemical concoction that exacerbates conditions previously rare before their advent?

An Introverts Guide to Accepting a Leadership Role - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / An Introverts Guide to Accepting a Leadership Role - Introvert Whisperer An Introverts Guide to Accepting a Leadership Role So you’ve just accepted a new leadership role and you’re naturally nervous (as well as excited) about the new position. Well, don’t worry because everybody gets anxious about taking on a bigger role. You are taking on more responsibility, will be looked at to deliver results, and will have others lean on you for support, so feeling nervous is a natural reaction to accepting a role as a leader. And as an introvert, there is even more reason to be tense, because a leadership role means there are going to be more fresh experiences and every day will bring new challenges to you. The first thing to remember is that this a great opportunity and being offered a leadership role is a huge compliment from your manager and the company you work for. So make sure to take the time to congratulate yourself for success. After that, take a few deep breaths and prepare for becoming a leader by following this list: Don’t Think Too Far Ahead Don’t think too far ahead or too broad. It’s easy to sit and think about a million things at once that are happening around you as a new leader, but it will do you no good. The big picture can be scary and intimidating but it’s more important to look at the now and set small goals for yourself. A leaders success is built off the small things they do that accumulate to a lot, so sit down and figure out an immediate plan of action with the things that you can control. Be Humble Being open with your peers and the employees that you will manage is something that will really break down walls between everybody. Especially as an introvert, if you can open up and lay everything on the line, then you will all be in a much better place moving forward. There’s nothing wrong with telling everyone that this is a new role for you and that you are learning as well. Sometimes, even leaders need help and there’s nothing wrong with that. By telling everyone that you are nervous about the new role and that you are going to be working hard to adapt and succeed, your peers will respect you for it. It can even be a great icebreaker between you and the others you are working with on a regular basis. Try and Open As Many Communication Lines Speaking of opening dialogue, it’s important to really connect and communicate with everyone right from the beginning. First impressions are important and how things are when you first take over as a leader will dictate the continued relationship between you and your peers. If you struggle with large groups, you might be more comfortable with 1-on-1 conversations over a cup of coffee or even just in your office, away from others. As an introvert, don’t worry â€" you will be able to ask the questions and let them run the conversation when you talk with these employees. By talking with your coworkers and employees, you will be able to set expectations, figure out how they feel right out of the gate, and figure out a great way to operate things moving forward. Define Goals So They Are Known When you talk with coworkers, you will be able to make sure that everyone knows the goals and what everyone is working toward. These goals can be set as a company or as a department but setting things up openly is an important part. It means that everyone is accountable and that people won’t constantly be coming to you to define goals and set expectations. Another great thing about setting these goals is that you can do it on your own and then share it with everyone. For an introvert, being able to set company and department goals on your own is a great part of the transition process to becoming a leader. Keep Working At Becoming A Better Leader One important thing for being a leader is understanding that it is a process. Just because you have been promoted, you are not expected to know everything and be the perfect leader. You are still in a position to grow and learn as you get comfortable. There are lots of great options like online courses, Leadership Assessment Tests, reading informative articles about becoming a great leader, talking to other leaders, and more. Leadership is a responsibility that allows you to adjust and adapt. You can make mistakes as a leader â€" and you will. So be ready for them and be sure to learn from them rather than run from them. If you are in a leadership role, then you have earned it somehow or another. So be proud, take a deep breath, and go get it. Multi-digit multiplication

Multi-digit multiplication Multiplication is one of the basic and important arithmetic operation used in different branches of mathematics. Multiplication of two numbers is like adding one them as many times as the other number. Multiplication is denoted by a cross sign . In multiplication the order of the numbers doesnt change the answer. So multiplication of two numbers is commutative and associative. Digits is number of place value in a given number. Example 1: Multiply the two digit numbers 56 and 13? Solution: Given are two digit numbers 56 and 13. Here for the multiplication 56 is multiplied to the ones place of 13; 56 x 3 = 168. Now the 56 is multiplied to the tens place of 13; 56 x 1 = 56. (Place a zero next to the derived answer gives 560.) Now add the two multiplied numbers. This gives 168 + 560 = 728. Hence 56 x 13 = 728. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) What is the answer when 426 is multiplied with 5? a) 2000 b) 2300 c) 2130 d) None of these. Correct answer: option c. Explanation: Here given for the multiplication 426 x 5 =? Multiply 5 to the ones place of 426; 6 x 5 = 30. (Carry the 3.) Multiply 5 to the tens place of 426; 426 x 2 = 10. (Add the carried 3; 10 + 3 = 13 and carry the 1) Multiply 5 to the hundredth place of 426; 4 x 5 = 20. (Add the carried 1; 20 + 1 = 21.) Hence 426 x 5 = 2130.
